Project Context
As part of the $350-million reimagination of Scotiabank Arena—Toronto’s premier sports and entertainment venue—Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment sought to transform the visitor experience across every touchpoint. This high-profile redevelopment required bold, future-facing design interventions that would match the scale of the space and the energy of the fans. Our mandate was to curate a permanent artwork that would live at the heart of this transformation—an iconic statement embedded in the architecture itself, reflective of the arena’s position as the cultural and emotional centre of the city.
Our Solution
We collaborated with Toronto-based Michael Awad, an artist, architect, and academic in the fields of theoretical physics, robotics and urban design. Together, we developed a site-specific installation that spans the ceiling of the arena’s main concourse—a vast, immersive work that functions as both a physical work of art and a spatial experience. Drawing on his background in architecture and photographic engineering, Awad designed a custom modular system to construct a three-dimensional city-scale map of Toronto, with Scotiabank Arena at its core. Known for capturing urban rhythm through time-based visual narratives, he approached this project as a sculptural extension of his long-standing interest in the city as a living organism. The work is both technically ambitious and emotionally resonant, anchoring the arena with a powerful sense of place and purpose.
